scsm 2010 sp1 webparts Unable to add selected web part(s).

Problem Description

After upgrading the System Center Service Manager 2010 from RTM to SP1, we failed to add the web part through SharePoint website(integrated with Service Manager Web Portal).

It reported the following error.

Unable to add selected web part(s).

Top Announcements: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Cause

This problem is caused by the .dll files used by the SharePoint integrated website is still RTM version. We need to replace them manually with the SP1 verion files.

Resolution

1. Check the dll file version under the SharePoint website, which is integrated with Service Manager Portal

   C:\inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirectories\ bin

For example, C:\inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirectories\16096\bin

Make sure most of the files version is 7.0.6555.0

2. If the file version in the above folder is less than 7.0.6555.0, please do the following actions.

a. Backup the folder “C:\inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirectories \bin”

b. Go to the System Center Service Manager Portal installation folder, by default it is as following

   C:\inetpub\wwwroot\System Center Service Manager Portal\Analyst\Bin

There should be 18 .dll files under the folder and most of them are version 7.0.6555.0. Copy these 18 .dll files to replace the files mentioned in step 1.

c. Go to the C:\inetpub\wwwroot\System Center Service Manager Portal\Analyst\Bin\en, copy the 5 .dll files, and replace the files in the following path “C:\inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirectories\bin\en”

d. Search the following two files on the Service Manager Management Server.
C:\inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirectories \bin\Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.ServiceManager.WebParts.dll
C:\inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirectories \bin\en\Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.ServiceManager.WebParts.resources.dll

In case either of them is less than 7.0.6555.0, please search the files to find out the latest version and replace in the above folder as well.

e. Open a DOS command line with the administrative right, then input “iisreset” to restart the IIS services.

With many thanks to Jeffrey Gu for pointing this out.

CU2 for SCSM SP1

Cumulative Update 2 (CU2) for Microsoft System Center Service Manager 2010 Service Pack 1 (SP1) is available for download from the Microsoft Download website.
This cumulative update is a rollup of fixes for System Center Service Manager 2010 SP1. It supersedes SP1 Cumulative Update 1 (CU1) and contains a superset of the fixes that are provided in SP1 CU1. It can be applied to SP1 CU1 or directly to a Service Manager 2010 SP1 installation.
Included in this update are fixes for the following issues:

  • Exception when you move between views in the UI
  • Console stability fix while you switch between views
  • Knowledge search performance improvements
  • Console performance improvements
  • Improvements to grooming
  • A fix to the notifications infrastructure
  • Added ability to see affected incidents in portal
  • Active Directory Connector improvements
  • Extending a large-volume class causes the Service Manager console to stop responding indefinitely
  • Adding a 25th child item on a list results in an error
  • Fact tables that are based on relationships with properties lose data after the relationship is deleted

You can download it from here:

Download the Cumulative Update 2 for Microsoft System Center Service Manager 2010 Service Pack 1

Additional detail and installation instructions:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2542118/en-us

There is also an Authoring Tool management pack library update with this so make sure you update the management packs in your library wherever you have the authoring tool installed.

Important If you have not installed Cumulative Update 1 (CU1), an additional step is required if you previously imported a custom management pack that defines a fact table that contains properties. In this case, you have to upgrade the custom management pack. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Increase the management pack version.
  2. Reseal the management pack.
  3. Reimport the management pack.
The MPSyncJob job then automatically syncs the reimported management pack to the data warehouse on the next synchronization, and the affected transform procedures are updated.

On a computer that has the Service Manager Authoring Tool installed, update the management packs in the Library folder of the Authoring Tool. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. On the cumulative update download page, download the following file to the local computer on which the Authoring Tool is installed:

    KB2542118_MPLibraryUpdate_AuthoringTool.exe

  2. Double-click the .exe file, and then wait for the files to be extracted.
  3. Locate the following folder:

    %SystemDrive%\Microsoft System Center\Service Manager 2010\hotfix_KB2542118\AuthoringToolMPUpdate

Note This is where the management pack files were extracted.

  4. Copy all files from that folder to the following folder, replacing the existing files:

    Authoring Tool installation drive\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft System Center\Service Manager 2010 Authoring\Library\

  5. If the Authoring Tool is running, restart it to load the updated management packs.

Note If you do not update the management packs in the Library folder of the Authoring Tool, and then you later try to open a management pack in the Service Manager Authoring Tool that references the updated management packs that are included with this cumulative update, you are prompted to specify the location of the updated management packs. The dialog box that is displayed may contain the following text:

Service Manager Authoring Tool
Referenced management pack not found:
[Name=Management Pack Name, Key Token=31bf3856ad364e35, Version=7.0.6555.101].
Click Ok to manually locate it.

CU1 for SCSM SP1

The first cumulative update for SP1 is now released. This must be applied on top of a SP1 installation. It fixes the following issues:

  • Extending a large-volume class hangs the console indefinitely
  • Adding 25th child item on a list results in an error
  • DW data loss for relationship fact tables with properties

You can download it from here:

Additional detail and installation instructions:

There is also an Authoring Tool management pack library update with this so make sure you update the management packs in your library wherever you have the authoring tool installed.

Service Manager console language

When changing the default incident Tier Queues (Tier1, Tier2, Tier3) to a different name trough the console in English the other language “incident tier queue list item” wont update.

The issue is that users with a Console installed on a system installed with a non-English language will show the default settings. (ex: nld: laag 1 )

So I changed my practices to delete the primary Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3 list items and just create new ones for the custom Tier queues the customer requires.

But if you still want to change the Tier Queues in other languages you can edit the management pack file (XML) and update the language settings in the languagepacks section of the XML File. ‘ServiceManager.IncidentManagement.Configuration.xml’

You first need to export the XML file. Then edit the XML file and then reimport the management pack XML file.

Service manager Exchange connector

After reading all the documentation of the exchange connector I  received the message “connector finished with error. “

After diving into the logs I found the following exchange connector Event Logs.

Issue 1

AutodiscoverConfiguration: <Trace Tag=”AutodiscoverConfiguration” Tid=”17″ Time=”2011-02-03 09:18:16Z”> failed: WebException (The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a send.) </Trace>

The solution was to make sure I could access as as the workflow user the the following url’s without a certificate error or other errors

https://<urltomailserver>/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml

https://<urltomailserver>/ews/exchange.asmx

Which in my environment redirects to

https://<urltomailserver>/ews/services.wsdl

Solution 2

On the Exchange IIS server there was an issue with  the authentication methods.

To fix this issue I had to disable forms authentication from the main site.

This made disappear this error messages in the service manager log.
